I want to point out a an article on a friends blog, The Five Fish. Karie, writes about a family recession and what her family has gone through. It isn’t a rare story and many, many mom bloggers are going through the very same thing. We choose not to talk about it because earning a low income or your income stats changing has become shameful. To me families fighting to stay afloat and making ends meet, is a compliment and blessing. It’s not easy to pay the bills, our family knows that well. We have had a lot of medical bills that we’ve had to pay and try to keep up with and we HAVE insurance. There is a myth that people who have insurance don’t have medical bills. That is so false. Did I mention I pay $370 month for said insurance? Rose doesn’t have insurance and they hassle the hell out of her when she goes in. This little surgery she had to have done has become a nightmare and you know what? Doctors and nurses care about the bottom line not the patient. Karie goes on to say that “emotional levels were taxed to [...]

Does the price of gas have you all tied up? I know it is here and we would walk to places but we live in the country. We do however have a rather good on gas mini van that I’m thankful for. Sadly with the beach a mile or so away I’ll be taking the van, because my crew goes to the beach in the morning and stays for most of the day. I decided to write about this today for a couple of reasons. One we have a beautiful day here and we’re supposed to get 6 to 8″ of snow tonight. Even for Michigan that is a lot in April. But also because our area has already hit $4.00 a gallon. Basic economics tells you what is going to happen next or has already happened. Groceries are going up. We have already had a family meeting and our garden is going to be bigger. I am going to attempt canning. Not sure I can do it with out wasting food but with my mom’s help maybe. We had a budget with $300 a month for a family of fives groceries and we were doing ok. Not great but [...]

Have you ever needed a second pair of glasses? My son broke both pairs of his in the first week he had them. My husband was sandblasting and toasted a pair. It happens (note to self only the boys I have two pairs because I play sports and I used to be afraid of ruining a pair during a game or outing. For those of you with kids I know you know how easy it is for your kids to lose a pair. With glasses starting as low as $7.95 a pair from Just Eyewear you should have a back up pair. It will save you and your child a lot of heartache. Other family member (*cough* dad) lose them in the house whether at the office, by the big easy chair, or on your bed side table if you don’t have them it can take up a lot of time looking for them. On Sunday, October 3rd, Just Eyewear is offering free shipping on all orders over $85. They are also having a sunglasses sale – free tint on any pair. Just enter the coupon code FREETINT in Shopping Cart when buying any pair of sunglasses. If you [...]

I’m pretty sure that I’m not the only one to notice that summer is rearing it’s ugly hot head at us. But if you’re like us you’re still enjoying family activities as the time comes closer for the kids to return to school, and we fall back into our routines. According to Phil Lempert an industry trend watcher, food prices are on the way up. (as if they aren’t high enough already, eh’?) Up 6% already compared with last year, due to various causes. Recently ConAgra Foods conducted a survey the revealed four of five Americans (79%) agree that they do not feel like the recession is over, and 71% (seven in ten) say they will continue the savings habits developed during this economic downturn. Many Americans are cooking at home more often, 75% are cooking more at home now compared with the same time last year. I’m not shocked. If you’re looking to stretch your dollar at the grocery store or make the most out of your meals at home, Phil is a great go-to guide when it comes to increasing and getting the best value from our food purchases. “Phil Lempert, frequent contributor to SimpleandDelicious.com and maintains the [...]

I get a lot of great cost cutting ideas from magazines, but I also get a lot of “woe is me” from them. I will see “Budget Recipes” only $2.50 a plate. WTH not at my house. I mean I can make a meal for under $5 for the whole family! Then there are those oh-so-great “Home Makeover” tips for under $1000 for a whole room! No way man ain’t happenin here! Then of course those great must have dresses for only $100 each, geeze I must be slummin w/ my $100 a year for a whole wardrobe. Magazine articles like those can make you feel deprived. They can make you feel like you “don’t have”. Let me not fool you, I have those feelings some times. I think most of us do from time to time. There are great ways to accomplish these things for a much less kick in your budget. I wish they would quiz REAL moms and people in the REAL world before printing these articles. You can feed your family a balanced meal on much much less than $2.50 a plate. For dinner alone that would come to $375 a month for my family. That’s a [...]
