Need Help With Groceries? This time of the year can be more trying than others. I especially appreciate programs that offer us a hand UP instead of a hand out. Sometimes using coupons just isn’t enough, with prices going sky high at grocery stores many families struggle to keep a decent square meal on the table. Not long ago, a wonderful program – Angel Food Ministries was forced to close their doors after 17 years. I was SO happy to find out that there is now a replacement for that program. So many families need help and if it’s just in the form of being able to purchase groceries at a lower price, then by all means – SPREAD THE WORD! Gaballi How Gaballi Is Helping With The Food Crisis in America: Gaballi provides boxes of top quality fruits and vegetables at a 30-70% savings from the current national retail prices. Gaballi is a faith based non-denominational organization that sells to EVERYONE. All food boxes are delivered to non-profit organizations (host sites) once a month at a scheduled date and time. The families pick up their boxes at their designated host site during these set time frames. For example; Saturday, [...]

How close are you to being homeless? The news is talking about the homeless daily. They talk non stop about homes that are foreclosed. These aren’t people living in squaller and on park benches. They aren’t people covered by a newspaper sleeping on the sidewalk. They are people like you and me, who very likely could afford their home and bills, until job hours were cut, and jobs were eliminated. Yesterday one of the banks I use was down graded to a 3 rating. That kind of scares me even though it is insured by the FDIC. It also will change how their loans are made and to who. People with steady jobs right now are lucky, very lucky. We are barely squeaking by but I’m thankful we are. If my husband lost his job it would be a whole new panic. Then there is the grocery bill. The food pantries in our area have bare shelves. Less people are donating because they don’t have the money and more people are coming for help. Our grocery bill has gone up and the amount I have to spend has dwindled. Our family rarely eats out and when we do it’s [...]

Chicken Soup is a family favorite here. We make it different ways sometimes it’s like a stew and sometimes with homemade noodles. Today I’m going with the homemade noodles. It’s chilly but sunny here and this should make the perfect light fare for the kids to gobble and play outside. OR as in my daughter’s case study for those senior exams. I don’t write a lot about cooking because I’m not overly fond of it. I seem to always be missing one or two ingredients and we don’t live in an area where you can quickly pick something up. Now that my kitchen is almost finished I’m finding it fun to prepare dinner on my new counter tops and peek into my new cupboards. I’m slowly finding my self getting excited to cook, and have found some great chicken soup recipes at Allrecipes. I put a small turkey in the oven and when it’s done we’ll cut it up and have turkey sandwiches for dinner tomorrow, turkey cassarole and possible carrot soup with a highlight of turkey. We will easily have 3 meals or more on this turkey and I thought to check the price. It was $9 on sale. [...]

And she told me once a week they had sandwiches for dinner. I was astonished. I grew up in a large family and every night it was a sit down full meal. I did take her advice though and started making sandwiches once a week. Wow! My family loved it. I went further and started making soup one night a week double wow! Both went over very well in our family. So I asked my mom the other day why we never had what normal people ate like soup, sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs etc. She told me with so many in our house 5 of us kids at home at a time and themselves and anyone we decided to bring home with us it just wasn’t economical. She also reminded me that we ate a lot of economical ethnic food. (I do miss that) I can share with you a few of my cost cutting fast meals. Sandwiches – buy a day old loaf of Walmart French Bread, and 1/2 lb of your favorite deli meat and have it shaved til it falls apart. Accumulate your favorite accompaniments. Here is what mine would look like. French loaf sliced in 1/2, [...]
