What are some things you can do with used gift cards and outdated credit cards? Other than cutting them up with a good pair of scissors? There really isn’t a huge demand for empty gift cards. However, here at our house we now have a high demand for these things.

Guitar picks. You make guitar picks out of them. You use your scissors, outline an old pick then carefully cut around the edge using precise hand control to make sure it’s just right. Then it’s a guitar pick. Right? Wrong. Absolutely wrong, that’s NOT how you do it anymore. After you check this out, you’ll never make one by hand again. You won’t have to. You’ll have creativity dripping from the depths of your crafting abilities.Even if you have a lack of crafting abilities, this should give you inspiration and ideas galore!
That is not how you do it now. Thanks to Pick Punch LLC, there’s a whole new way to do things. Since I scrapbook and love to embellish I often browse around different punches. I want a good sturdy punch that will do the job with a variety of materials. And let’s face it, not all things are created equal. I was actually searching for Graduation Gifts for my son and his best friend, who will proudly walk the stage this spring. Yes, I’m busting at the seams with pride and excitement.
The Pick Punch is definitely made from high quality materials, it punches through a variety of materials with little effort. (Don’t try CD’s, DVD’s or hard cases, the punch won’t stand up to abuse, those items are simply too thick) You can take a look around the Pick Punch website, there is a massive offering of tips, ideas and ways to use the Pick Punch. A wealth of information at your fingertips. I was overly impressed with several things. The information provided, ways to use, materials you can punch on, tips and tricks, how to decorate your picks, how to finish guitar picks and lots more. I could list all of those here but if I did, what would be the point of you visiting their site?
I was super curious to find out just what this little dude would punch through, now keep this in mind – if you abuse the pick punch it’s not going to last. Be kind to it. Treat with love, respect and creativity and it’ll thank you over time. The owner of Pick Punch LLC has massive lists of what you can, should and should not do with your pick punch.
One material not listed on their site to make your own guitar pick was aluminum, as in a soda can. Now this isn’t a recommended material so if you choose to do this, you’re opting to do so at your own risk. However, you all know that I like to test the limits. It did punch a perfect guitar pick from a soda can, we filed down the edges with the recommended sanding block (sold separately from the Pick Punch site).
A guitar player may not have much interest in a thin aluminum guitar pick, but I wanted it for a scrapbook page I’m working on for my son. It won’t be a material that the punch will be going through often, as I said – treat it with some TLC and it’ll reward you with an increased life span.
Ideas to decorate and create your own picks are endless, your imagination serves as the only limitation in this process. Von, the owner of PickPunch.com has so many project ideas, tutorials, tips and tricks on the website. It’s a must for your bookmarks. It’s not limited to just simple pictures, there are videos as well. Good quality videos to walk you through creating your own guitar picks, with your own style! A musician needs to express him/herself and what better way to do that than to make their own picks for fans to crave!
Materials -
- Don’t want to always use an old gift card or credit card, maybe you just want to get creative, then you can purchase a variety of sheeting direct from Pick Punch in different thickness. Not all picks are made the same, a difference in the thickness creates different sounds. My favorite would be the clear sheeting, I’m ultimately fascinated with the clear sheeting to embed an image between two picks.
You’ll want (and probably need) a sanding block for your guitar pick projects. I think the sanding block will serve as the second most used tool in making your own picks, the first being the actual Pick Punch. You’ll want to smooth the edges around your picks once they are punched, some want a curved type edge. Either way, you don’t want a sharp edge.
As a gift, this is perfect for anyone that plays a guitar, scrapbooks or crafts! The boys are always losing their picks, I find them in the dryer lint catch all the time. Now, they’ll always have a guitar pick, just a punch away. As the parent of a guitar player, as a reviewer and a lover of many things diy, I give the Pick Punch a huge two thumbs up!
After several searches I found two websites that carry a similar product. The first website is of course featured here, PickPunch.com, the other site …. well it’s their loss and to me it speaks volumes in regards to customer service that they wouldn’t take the time to contact me back.
If you have any interest in Pick Punch, making your own guitar picks and the tutuorials offered then I highly suggest you connect with Pick Punch.
