For me (my family) to take the Angler’s Legacy Pledge was is easy.
I’m certain that I have told you all how much we love fishing, especially in the warmer months. It is the top activity that we do together.
One of my many favorite memories was when hubby and I were fishing in one of our favorite places and I heard some splashing, I looked up the river and there was a deer swimming across. I can’t recreate that moment for you, but after I picked my jaw up off the ground I was able to snap a quick picture. It’s kind of hard to see, but it’s there. I can’t make out if it was a buck or a doe – nonetheless, it’s beautiful. (click the picture to make it a little bigger)
As unbelievable as this is to me, my kids have had friends over that have never gone fishing. Ever. I’m pretty happy to say that when those kids returned home they had a new lifetime skill! You see, it’s so unbelievable to me because our kids have been fishing since they were old enough to hold their own pole.
Here are some of my favorite pictures of my kids while fishing.
The top one is my daughter walking along checking “jug lines”, jugging is another way to fish without using a pole. It’s a HUGE amount of fun. We were at our pond for this picture, but you can also use this method of fishing by tightly securing your jugs to an over hanging limb, also called “limb lines”. Check your local rules & regulations on any method before you dive in. You can find this information and a lot more on TakeMeFishing.org, you can sort this information by state as well.

The bottom picture above is really a kind of funny story. My son was helping my daughter get a rather large catfish off her line when he accidentally dropped it. Look at her face. She was livid!
Going fishing is more than just throwing a line out in the water. It’s a learning experience (over and over again) creating memories and a lasting impression. No matter how young your child is they too can participate in a fishing trip. For example, when my daughter was 3, she really couldn’t walk around with a pole complete with a hook. So we would just tie a sinker and a bobber on and let her go. She felt like she was just like everyone else and we didn’t have to worry about her (or us) landing a fishing hook through the skin.
Don’t like to eat fish? Practice the catch and release program. Join someone else and go on their fishing trip, there is so much more to do than just fish. But don’t knock it until you really give it a try.

Rescued frog eggs & catfish still in the water.
If your scared of going out on boats, then don’t. There are lots of places that you can fish from the bank, safely and securely.
It’s so easy to teach kids while out fishing about the environment and taking care of the land. One of our rules that we instill in our kids is that if someone allows you to fish from their property, be it public or private – leave the land better than you found it. Now, it’s simply habit to look around for trash that has washed in, fishing line someone may have dropped and double checking to see that none of us have dropped or overlooked anything. I love seeing the responsibility in my kids, that in itself is a reward. Your teaching someone skills that will last a lifetime.
Going fishing isn’t just about fishing, it can be the experience of a lifetime. My son had a baby deer, still wearing his little spots walk up to him, just being nosey. Many people will go their entire lives and never have that happen.

My favorite fishing memory is when I was little and with my grandpa. I wouldn’t touch the worms or fish.

I remember when we were young, my dad took us fishing. I had to put the worm on the hook for my older sister who was so squeamish about it. I used to taunt her with those worms!
