Diary of a Wimpy Kid
But it’s not a diary, it’s a DVD!
The DVD is based on the best-selling (hysterically funny) illustrated novel by Jeff Kinney. A family comedy follows the fun adventures of pre-teen Greg Heffley. He has to survive the scariest time of his life. Middle School.
He’s absolutely convinced it’s the “dumbest idea ever invented”, thinking it’s rigged with hundreds of social landmines none of which are wedgies, bullies, swirlies, lunchtime banishment of the cafeteria floor, and a festering piece of cheese with nuclear cooties that he must beat to become popular. The diary (journal) that follows his thoughts, tales of family trials and tribulations and would be school yard success.
While watching Diary of a Wimpy Kid, I was utterly amazed at how many just walked on past and would not touch that single piece of cheese. I just loved seeing the cheese! Greg Heffley suffers the humiliation of being beaten in wrestling by a girl which was photographed and featured on the front page of the school paper! Oh the humiliation!
We can all relate to Greg Heffeley’s character because we know what it’s like being an adolescent trying to navigate our way through the social etiquette of junior high.
He’s surrounded by hairy-freckled morons, wedgie lovers, bullies and the infamous slice of cheese with nuclear cooties.

We haven’t watched the movie, but my son loves the books. One thing I really love about the books is that I think it encourages the idea that a diary or journal are not just for girls, and I hope this well help many boys be able to write their thoughts and feelings. It’s hard to find journals with locks on them that don’t look girlie, but I hope the Wimpy Kid franchise will market some that are more gender-neutral or even geared to boys.
As women, we often complain about men not discussing their feelings (yes, I know I’m using broad generalities here) and I think the best way to combat that is to raise our boys to be aware, understand and articulate their feelings as they grow and mature into men.
