I might use the eraser cartons and drop them in with a note attached, or an always needed pencil with a note that says “knew you’d need this, Love Mom!” I like to leave them guessing on what I might do when they aren’t around. 
I feel like I’m leaving them a random smile to be found when they aren’t looking.
