For us means getting back into a routine. By mid-summer we have usually lost ourselves in one task or another. Be it swimming, BBQ’s, fishing or what have you, by the time August rolls around and the thoughts of back to school looming, I am so ready for that routine to be back in our lives.
Right now the kids are visiting other churches by going with them to Vacation Bible School, and they always have something new and fun. Church camp week has passed, and that was un-eventful for us. However my daughter did share that one boy broke his leg while there, and had to go home early. Poor guy.
Which I guess all-in-all that explains our “Back To Peace” school gift guide. To me it’s a bit of peace through the day as our rambunctious kids are filling the school halls, and our homes are getting back into routine. Having, keeping and sticking to a routine has always added peace around our house.
The #1 rule around our house for getting back in routine and ready for school is bed time. I’m not sure what was easier, when they were little and we had bed time battles or now that they have gotten older – which creates a whole new bedtime battle. As many of you know, my kids are ages 12 and 16.
Every night I shut the house down 15-30 minutes earlier. Meaning our usual late night movie watching is coming to an end. I have always called out “Quiet time or bed time!”, meaning that if I have to hush anyone that it immediately becomes bedtime. Quiet time means you can lay in your bed -quietly- and read a book, watch a movie (rare treat here), or play a hand held game. More or less like winding down. One peep and it’s over.
What is something you do with/for your kids to get back into the swing of things?

I agree about bedtime, been moving it up slowly to make it easier. One thing we struggle with are meals. I’m trying to get my son back on a meal schedule and that’s hard. He eats like crazy, hungry every few hours and it’s going to be really hard for him to go five hours between breakfast and lunch when school starts.
